Memo:    Spring Select Information

To:        All parents and players


Because there are many questions from players, parents and coaches, here's a quick note to let everyone know how Spring Select in La Quinta AYSO works.

General:
  1. After the regular season, there is a SECOND SEASON of Soccer each year
  2. The second season consists of the SPRING SELECT PROGRAM
  3. The SPRING SELECT PROGRAM takes place after the Regional Tournament (La Quinta) and the AREA Tournament (Desert Cities)
  4. The Spring Select Season starts after the Regional Tournament and runs thru May.
  5. Spring Select teams sometimes participate in other weekend tournaments during June and July.
Board:
  1.   The board selects a committee of 3-5 members to govern the Spring Selection Process
  2.   The Committee chooses coaches and reviews the rosters of each team.
Coaches:
  1. Coaches submit a Letter of Intent
  2. All coaches must be certified in the division they want to coach
  3. Coaches are selected based on
    • Exhibition of the AYSO Philosophies
    • Sportsmanship
    • Dedication to the league / Volunteering
    • Participation in the Referee Program
    • Coaching Experience
  4. Coaches are NOT selected based on their regular season W/L record or placement in the Regional Tournament.
  5. Not all coaches will be selected for the second season.
Players:
  1. Players DO NOT TRY OUT for Spring Select.  They are CHOSEN by the coach.
  2. Players are typically chosen by recommendations from their regular season coach based on...
    • Talent
    •  Sportsmanship
    • Attitude
  3. Players must pay an additional fee for participation in the Second Season.
  4. Players must have participated in the Regular Season in our Region.
  5. Only a SELECT few players will be asked to participate in the second season.
  6. The level of competition is often much higher than our Regular Season.

Rules and Guidelines
  1. Second Season Coaches are not allowed to approach or discuss selections made to their teams with parents or players until that players regular season team is eliminated from the Regional Tournament.
  2. Divisions with more than one Spring Select team will divide the players equally among all teams.  Each team should have the same relative talent. 
  3. Players that play other sports are strongly discouraged from participating.  Only players showing a strong dedication to participation in the Second Soccer Season, will be selected.  Please notify your coach of any other sports/ activities that may interfere with the demanding spring schedule.
  4. All participants in the second season will require approval by the Regional Commissioner and Board.

Expectations
  1. As a Parent or Player, there is nothing for you to do to qualify for Spring other than participate in the Fall Season.  There is no one to call and there are no tryouts.
  2. As a coach, we need to know that you interested and you must be certified in your division.
  3. All AYSO philosophies are still in affect during the Second Season.
